Sample Questions and How to Approach Them
- "How would you respond to a sudden non-reassuring fetal heart rate pattern?" Walk through immediate actions: reposition the patient, check for cord compression indicators, notify the provider, and prepare for possible emergent delivery — emphasize speed and clear escalation.
- "Tell me about a time you supported a family through a difficult or unexpected outcome." Focus on presence and compassion, and how you balanced clinical duties with emotional support without overstepping the provider's role in delivering news.
- "How do you manage a patient in active labor who is anxious or in significant pain?" Discuss comfort measures, clear communication about the process, and coordinating with anesthesia when appropriate.
- "Describe your experience recognizing and responding to postpartum hemorrhage." Be specific about recognizing early signs (excessive bleeding, rising heart rate, dropping blood pressure) and the initial nursing response before the provider arrives.
- "How do you balance multiple laboring patients at different stages at once?" Explain prioritizing based on labor progression and acuity, and looping in the charge nurse early when volume spikes.
- "Why labor and delivery specifically?" Give a genuine, specific reason tied to your clinical experience or a rotation, not a generic "I love babies" answer.
