ICU Nurse Interview Questions
ICU nurse interviews run an HR screen, a unit interview with the nurse manager, and a clinical-judgment round testing critical thinking under high-acuity, high-stakes pressure.
What to Expect
| Round | Format | Focus | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| HR/recruiter screen | 15-20 min | Licensure, certifications (ACLS/CCRN if applicable), availability | Low |
| Unit interview | 30-45 min | Critical care experience, comfort with high patient acuity | Medium-High |
| Clinical scenario round | 30-45 min | Rapid deterioration scenarios, multi-system patient management | High |
| Panel/team interview | 30 min | Teamwork under pressure, communication with families in crisis | Medium |
Prep time: 1-2 weeks — refresh core ICU scenarios (hemodynamic instability, ventilator management basics, sepsis recognition) and prepare 2-3 stories that show composure during a rapid patient decline.
Sample Questions and How to Approach Them
- "Tell me about a time a patient rapidly deteriorated. What did you do?" Structure your answer with SBAR: what you assessed, what you escalated, and the outcome, emphasizing speed and clear communication with the team.
- "How do you manage multiple critical patients with competing needs at once?" Talk through continuous reassessment and triaging based on airway/breathing/circulation risk, plus when you'd call for backup rather than trying to handle everything alone.
- "How do you communicate with a family during a medical crisis?" Emphasize clarity, empathy, and knowing when to involve the physician or a chaplain/social worker rather than overstepping your role.
- "Describe a time you caught a physician order that seemed incorrect. What did you do?" Show you can advocate for the patient by questioning respectfully and confirming through the proper channel, without either staying silent or being combative.
- "How do you cope with the emotional toll of high-mortality environments like the ICU?" Give an honest, specific coping strategy (debriefing with colleagues, a personal routine) rather than claiming it doesn't affect you.
- "What ICU-specific certifications or experience do you bring?" Be specific about certifications (ACLS, CCRN, PALS) and the type of ICU (medical, surgical, cardiac, neuro) you've worked in or trained in.
