Goldman Sachs Financial Analyst Interview Questions

Expect a recruiter screen, a technical interview on accounting and valuation, and a superday of 4-5 back-to-back interviews with analysts and associates testing both technical skill and stamina.

What to Expect

RoundFormatFocusDifficulty
Recruiter screen20-30 min phone/videoResume walkthrough, motivation for GS, basic fitLow
Technical interview30-45 min, 1:1Accounting (3-statement links), valuation basics, mental mathHigh
Superday4-5 back-to-back 30-min interviewsTechnical drilling, behavioral/fit, deal or market discussionHigh
Behavioral/fitWoven into every round"Why Goldman", "walk me through your resume", teamwork storiesMedium

Prep time: 3-4 weeks if you're new to core finance technicals (accounting flow-throughs, DCF mechanics); 1-2 weeks for refreshers if you've interned in finance before.

Sample Questions and How to Approach Them

  1. "Walk me through the three financial statements and how they connect." Answer in a clean, memorized sequence: net income flows to retained earnings and the cash flow statement; depreciation is added back; capex hits PP&E; the cash balance rolls to the balance sheet. Practice saying it out loud until it's automatic.
  2. "Why Goldman Sachs, and why this specific division?" Avoid generic prestige answers. Reference a specific deal, desk, or culture element and tie it to your own experience or coursework.
  3. "Walk me through your resume." Structure this as a 90-second narrative connecting past experience to why finance, why Goldman, in that order.
  4. "If a company's depreciation increases by $10, what happens to the three statements?" Talk through net income down, cash flow adjustment adds it back, PP&E down on the balance sheet, cash up relative to net income alone. This tests whether you actually understand mechanics, not memorized rules.
  5. Behavioral: "Tell me about a time you worked under pressure with a tight deadline." Use the STAR structure and pick an example with a quantifiable result.
  6. "What's a market or deal you've been following, and what's your view?" Read financial news the week before your interview and have one informed opinion ready, not a summary.
