JPMorgan Business Analyst Interview Questions

JPMorgan's business analyst interviews run a recruiter screen, a technical round on SQL/Excel and requirements-gathering, a case study, and a behavioral round on stakeholder communication.

What to Expect

RoundFormatFocusDifficulty
Recruiter screen20-30 minResume, motivation, logisticsLow
Technical interview30-45 minSQL basics, Excel, requirements documentationMedium
Case study45-60 minAnalyze a business problem, propose a data-backed recommendationHigh
Behavioral round30-45 minStakeholder management, handling conflicting prioritiesMedium

Prep time: 1-2 weeks — refresh SQL joins/aggregations and Excel modeling, and prepare one detailed case example where you translated a business need into a technical requirement.

Sample Questions and How to Approach Them

  1. "How would you write a SQL query to find customers with no transactions in the last 90 days?" Talk through a LEFT JOIN with a date filter and a NULL check, even if you can't write perfect syntax on a whiteboard — the logic matters most.
  2. "Walk me through how you'd gather requirements for a new reporting dashboard from a non-technical stakeholder." Describe asking about their decision, not their desired chart type first — get to the underlying question before designing the solution.
  3. "Tell me about a time stakeholders disagreed on priorities. How did you resolve it?" Use a real example and land on how you got alignment, ideally with data.
  4. "Case: transaction volume is down 15% quarter over quarter. How do you investigate?" Structure the answer: segment by product, channel, and customer type to isolate where the decline concentrates before jumping to causes.
  5. "How do you validate that your analysis is correct before presenting it?" Mention cross-checking totals against a second source or a sanity-check calculation — banks weight this heavily given regulatory scrutiny.
  6. "Describe a time you had to say no to a stakeholder's request." Show you can push back professionally while offering an alternative that still meets their underlying need.
