Spotify UX Designer Interview Questions
Spotify's UX design process runs a recruiter screen, a portfolio review, a live design challenge or whiteboard exercise, and cross-functional interviews with a PM and engineer.
What to Expect
| Round | Format | Focus | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recruiter screen | 20-30 min | Portfolio overview, motivation, logistics | Low |
| Portfolio review | 45-60 min | Depth of process: research, iteration, measurable outcomes | High |
| Design challenge/whiteboard | 45-60 min | Live problem-solving on a music/audio product scenario | High |
| Cross-functional interviews | 30-45 min each | Collaboration style with PM and engineering | Medium |
Prep time: 2-3 weeks — rebuild your portfolio narrative to foreground process and measurable impact (not just polished screens), and rehearse one 45-minute whiteboard exercise out loud.
Sample Questions and How to Approach Them
- "Walk me through a project in your portfolio end to end." Lead with the problem and user research, then design decisions, then the measured outcome. Avoid starting with the final visuals.
- "Design challenge: how would you redesign the podcast discovery experience?" Ask clarifying questions first (which user segment, what's the current pain point), then sketch a rough flow and explain trade-offs out loud.
- "Tell me about a time your design was rejected by a PM or engineer. What did you do?" Show you can separate ego from craft — describe how you incorporated the feedback or made a case for your original direction with data.
- "How do you balance a strong personal design point of view with data that contradicts it?" Give a real example where you changed your mind because of user research or A/B test results.
- "How would you measure success for a redesigned feature?" Name concrete metrics (engagement rate, task completion, retention) tied to the specific feature, not generic "user satisfaction."
- "Describe your process for a project with almost no existing research." Talk about lightweight discovery methods (guerrilla testing, quick surveys, competitive analysis) you'd use under time pressure.
